More about:
As technology further develops towards making our lives easier, retail scanners frequently form part of an effective EPOS system.

The barcode scanner reads the barcode on a product or packaging and then translates this into a command on a till.
For example; for each scanned item, the barcode scanner tells the back-end system to add the cost to the customer's bill while removing each specific item from the stock list.

The RFID scanner reads item tags that are placed in or on products or in packaging or even embedded in plastic bags.
RFID scanners are not as common as barcode scanners at present but as costs of producing the tags decrease they look likely to achieve more widespread use in the near future.
RFID tags can hold much more information than barcodes.
Tags are usually passive i.e they don't need a power source, and are activated by the RFID receiver sending a radio wave to which the tag responds by sending back the data it contains.
